This objective of this project was to design a crematorium on Alcatraz Island. My approach was to re-purpose the existing building, reconfigure the space by carving the program out of the cell walls. I created a visual journey for each funeral party to transition as the mourners pass through the main bays. The space transforms as the walls shift from narrow somber passage ways to wider and more expansive rooms. The semi-private, yet open plan of the ceremony halls, allows for the opportunity to make mourning a less solitary experience, while still giving room for each party to have their own ceremony and say goodbye with their loved ones.
